Electric Bike vs Electric Scooter: Which Should You Buy?

June 2026 · EBikesCompany

E-bikes and electric scooters both get you from A to B without petrol — but they suit very different riders. Here is how to choose.

The question comes up every week: should I get an electric bike or an electric scooter? Both are great ways to cut your commute costs and avoid traffic. But they are built for different riders, different routes, and different lifestyles. Here is the honest breakdown.

Range: How Far Can You Go?

Electric bikes generally win on range. A mid-range e-bike like the HIDOES B10 delivers up to 65km on a single charge. Top-end models push 80km+. Electric scooters typically sit between 40–70km depending on the battery — though premium models like the RCB D7 can hit 110km under ideal conditions.

For most daily commuters under 20km each way, both are fine. If you are doing longer distances or hilly routes, lean towards an e-bike.

Speed

In most countries, road-legal e-bikes and scooters are capped at 25km/h (15.5mph) under pedal assist or throttle. Off-road models are a different story. If you need to keep up with city traffic, both will do the job.

Storage and Portability

Scooters win here. A folding scooter like the iENYRID M4 PRO S+ folds down in seconds and slides under a desk or into a car boot. Even folding e-bikes like the KOOLUX X1 are bulkier and heavier. If your commute involves public transport or tight storage, a scooter is the practical choice.

Comfort on Longer Rides

E-bikes are significantly more comfortable for longer rides. You have a saddle, handlebars at a natural height, and pedals to share the work. Fat-tire models like the AOVO PRO AP20 absorb bumps well even on rough roads. Scooters require you to stand the whole time, which gets tiring beyond 30 minutes.

Cost

Entry-level scooters start cheaper — you can get a solid commuter scooter for around $250. Entry-level e-bikes start around $430 and go up quickly for quality models. That said, a good e-bike will last longer and handle more varied terrain.

The Verdict

  • Choose an e-bike if your commute is over 15km, involves hills, or you want exercise as part of your ride.
  • Choose a scooter if you commute short distances, need to fold and carry it, or use public transport part of the way.
